When You're Fired

My sweet, sweet Grandmother gave me this pamphlet.
To which I promptly replied, "I wasn't fired, I was LAID OFF!"

So yall know I was laid off over 2 months ago.  I found that a lot of my friends had been in a similar situation at some point in their young careers.  So, I amassed all the advice I received and things I learned during my time off.

What you should do...
Take the first week to be depressed.
What you're gonna do...
Spontaneously bust into tears until you start going on interviews.  There's a bit of depression you go through when you lose your job, whether you were fired or laid off.

What you should do...
Workout every day.
What you're gonna do...
Lay on the couch every day watching Maury.  Like seriously, how much sex did you have within a 2 week period to have 9 potential baby daddys?

What you should do...
Don't apply to every job.
What you're gonna do...
Apply to jobs you don't really want.  But you really shouldn't.  Since you have been forced into a life change, you should definitely be selective about your next position.  After all, you should make your next move your best move.

What you should do...
Keep at least 1 luxury.
What you're gonna do...
Keep a couple of luxuries.  And you know what, I'm okay with that.  When I got laid off, I still got my hair, nails, & eyebrows done...cuz that's just what I do.  Who wants to be unemployed AND ugly??

What you should do...
Volunteer.
What you're gonna do...
Volunteer.  Giving back to other people when you feel your lowest can really put things into perspective.  Trust me, you won't feel so desperate about your situation when you see children standing in line at a soup kitchen.

What you should do...
File for unemployment.
What you're gonna do...
Get them checks, regardless of how small they are.  Any money coming in is good money.

What you should do...
Don't be embarrassed.
What you're gonna do...
Be slightly embarrassed about your current situation.  But with the way the world is, more people than you think have found themselves in your same situation.

What you should do...
Block out everyone else's voices and do what is right for you.
What you're gonna do...
Listen to what other people think you should do.

What you should do...
Don't get sick.
What you're gonna do...
Get sick, cuz of course NOW you have no insurance.

Having said all that, I'm happy to report that I got another job!  I was very fortunate to only be out of commission for about 3 months.  And today's my first day.  So wish me luck!
